Brandt Reading Log Draft
Topic: Critical Reading
This piece of writing was written when when my class learned about the concepts of "literacy" and "sponsors" along with the text "The Sponsors of Literacy" by Deborah Brandt. These concepts will be explained further in the upcoming writing piece.
Critical Reading is formally defined as the ability to analyze, synthesize, interpret, and evaluate ideas, information and texts. During this topic of learning in class, we, students, were taught how to read a text and analyze it to determine the main idea, supporting ideas, and separate the facts from opinions from supporting evidence. This piece shows part of a draft of a final piece and shows the work the goes into creating a piece of analytical writing.
With that, this writing piece displays my responses from a published, professional piece of work about how a persons' upbringing can develop different types of literacies and skills for them to use in the future. All aspects of their life teach them something, even the location that they lived in or their friends and family's experiences. It is important because it talk about how two specific people developed through their backgrounds.
Helps me exhibit my learning process by creating a revisable draft. I can change it at any time depending if I come up with a better idea and how I can build off of that. The last part is an outline of the people that were used as examples in Deborah Brandt's work "The Sponsors of Literacy". Serves as an example to the concept as a whole: Literacy.

January 23rd Journal: Literacies and Sponsors
Topic: Self Analysis
This piece of writing was written when when my class learned about the concepts of "literacy" and "sponsors" along with the text "The Sponsors of Literacy" by Deborah Brandt.
Self Analysis is the process by which one analyzes oneself to understand ones particular characteristics, experiences, and motives. This piece analyzes myself through the concepts of Literacies and Sponsors. A Literacy is loosely defined by Brandt as the knowledge of how to do something through learned experiences, and Sponsors is defined as an individual, group, thing, or idea that makes it possible for one to do their literacy.
This journal entry from the beginning of one class represents concepts of literacy and sponsors in my own life. The categories of School, Home, Israel Team, and Work are some of the groups where I have responsibilities in my life right now. In each of these categories, I have a list of literacies as well as a list of sponsors to outline my role and my responsibilities in these categories. For example, for my group "Israel Team", some of my literacies are that I am a leader in one of its' departments, I am a musical harmony with the violin instrument, and I provide a part of the team's effort. Some of the sponsors in my life that are able to make these literacies possible and support them are the Conductor of Orchestras, the other Chair Members, sheet music, my violin, the location where we meet and practice, and the Israeli International School's correspondence.
The circles that are on some of the literacies in each category represents my main role, or my main literacy within this group of my life. These are important because in everyones' lives, they have some main responsibility in their social groups that keep the processes of the group going and developing. Without this main role, most social situations in life would not be able to exist because nobody would be putting their effort in to make this group run.
I believe that this piece is the best of all of my pieces to represent the concepts of literacy and sponsors because I'm better and more knowledgeable when writing about myself and analyzing these concepts in my own life. This is a natural and everyday thing that we did in class and I put this here to see how far I have come in the writing styles of journal entries. This piece of writing now helps me better understand the concepts of literacy and sponsors because it is easier for me to understand concepts when they relate to my own life, and this way, I can categorize parts of my life into these few titles of a category, a set of literacies, and a set of sponsors.
My life and my mindset at this time while creating this piece of writing was very complicated because I had many responsibilities to uphold while still partaking in school, home life, and social activities. One of the main responsibilities of my life at this time was to the Israel team because I was the only one out of all of the people who went on the school-funded trip to Israel that was responsible for recording our experiences there. I also was responsible for making a video of all of the footage from the trip to present to the Department of Music at my school. As this is a big responsibility, I thought that it would be important to include this as a category in this exercise to not only further understand the concepts of literacy and sponsors, but also to help me better outline my responsibilities for this particular group. Overall, outlining my major life roles and skills in these parts of my life helped me map out how I can keep achieving my goals and what resources I have to help me in these parts of my life.
